Q2Advance2005-10-04 12:09 | Gravgon
From now on, the use of the client Q2Advance is allowed in NDML.

However, auto-timers must be turned off.

The rules have been updated.

digital im interested in that too... but do u really know how kickfilter works? does it really make your crosshair "stable" or it only looks like "stable"?

Well, actually I'd be more worried about kickfilter than timers. We really don't need anything more to help railing, the game is too much railbased as it is...

Yeah, take the debate on q2players.org or something, would be better reading than any of the current forum posts going on there

Yeah, agreed. Stop the and start the

Although I love debates too, this one is starting to get on my nerves. It's pretty simple:

- Q2A is allowed
- Auto-timers are not allowed and are classified in the "CHEATS" section of the rules
- If you get caught using auto-timers, your team will receive a default loss for that game.

Why auto-timers aren't allowed? Because it's like that.

And seriously, ammo pack is featured on, like, 2 maps and isn't exactly the most important item...

Personally think it is such a wasted time looking for people using autotimers even if it's disallowed. As far as I know only the US players are using it, and all of them can just as easily use wav timers like everyone else so they shouldn't have a reason to use them really. And if they were, how are we to judge that? Forcing everyone who use q2a to have their wav timers with say_team message so we can tell that they are using wav timers and not q2a auto timers? As a result those timing in their head are not allowed to use q2a, which kinda defeats the point as many people using q2a are the ones who wants to play with pretty much default q2. Seeing how people pick up armors and quad etc at the exact time of spawn almost all the time in 4v4. Think there is little worry to be honest, but maybe I'm all wrong.

Pogo has a point about the backpack, but me concerned it plays more a role in duels than teamplay, but I could be mistaken. But thats pretty much the only place where automated timers are helpfull as noone really times that item regularily.

Anyway, nocheat and r1q2 has no real cheatprotection, so think the admins time should be more spent evaluating demos if cheat-accustation occurs, not on the pretty simplistic automated timers in q2a. But that's just my personal opinion.

And additionally: timing mega and weapons isn't not done with the client, only armors (where it times absolutely every armorpickup you actually hear and doesn't distinguish the diff armors either, timers are triggered by the sound alone) quad/invul and backpack/adrenaline are timed. Note also that q2a has most of the playersounds defaulted, like footsteps, spawnsounds, watersounds etc. As well as the nade counter has been removed. Think the advantage given if they happen to use the automated timer against the rules is severly exaggerated.

As much as we trust people not to cheat, we should trust the users of q2a not to use the timers as it is not allowed in the rules. If there is strong and solid proof of someone using it of course there will be something done.

I love the timer-debate by the way, intresting read actually.

Btw, is it allowed to use the "addtimer <name> <duration>" command to toggle onscreen timers triggered by a key? Just wondering.

i think if they're caught using it.. there should be a penality on that player of -50 frags. If there's a repeated offence.. ban form this season.

Also maybe in a case where's their's multiple admins, if I team is using TS or Ventrilo, an admin is allowed to sit in on their voice server. But i suppose with language barriers and such, this my not work out.

So if someone does use auto-timers, and their demo shows that it's possible they've turned it on (but no gurantee), they be disqualified?

What bothers me that it times ammo pack so precise, which is kinda hard with wavs since it's such a long time. And to think lots of people won't play with this enabled if it's undetectable is just naive imo...

Best way you can check it is watch someone's demo. Normally a pressed-timer will come with a "say_team" message. So someone perfectly timed for an item everytime, who didnt display any "timer say_team msg" could be using auto-timers.

But then again theres also people using vent, so only one needs to time, say, the quad and can call the spawn when its time.

But auto-timers are definitly a joke, I have yet to see someone use them. The hype around this subject is overly exaggerated.

we cannot

just like you cannot check if anyone has implemented autotimers for all armors and weapons on the map into nocheat...

or you cannot check if someone is using a low fov aimbot with nocheat

I've finally managed to have it working on my computer 2 days ago and I could test those infamous "auto-timers".

For those who were worried about them, all I can say is.. just test them and check how unefficient they are compared to .wav timers we all use right now.

Besides, Q2Advance is the most efficient anti-cheat at the moment so I thought it wasn't logical to disallow it in the league only for some (weak) auto-timers.

Those timers are still prohibited though.
To sum up: use q2advance, turn auto-timers off, use .wav timers instead
