Assessing someone's skill simply by playing that person will only provide you a comparison to your own level of play (i.e. you are better or worse than that opponent). An objective evaluation of the opponent's skill level is unlikely due to the subjective assessment of your own potential which tends to be depending on factors such as present mood, self-esteem, and luck factor.
This argument about whether David is as good as the proclaimed legendary EDL contestants in the previous seasons (e.g. Damiah, Purri, Syanid, Provi) will lead to nowhere since there is no valid data (i.e. 20-30 games against those players) to support to the argument in any way. However, treasuring from the current situation of the scene (presented active players, match outcomes), there is no ground to disclaim David's achievement. Until the final against Purri, he did not lose a single match (even against an inactive Damiah). It should indiciate something... and if you will bash this achievement by claiming that his opponents weren't the highest order then there are two sound arguments against that a) why didn't YOU get that far if opponents are not that good (remember the self-evaluation?) and b) then he is better than the most of the present active Q2 scene.
In my opinion the best way to check if someone is lucky or skill is simply playing with that person. Watching the demos does not give us a complete idea how good is a player.
I play with David several times, this guy has huge skill. Muerte play 2-3 duels with David, and than appolagise him.

david just had njub luck. since before EDL he was random nub he got lucky to be drop in lucky group
this way he couldn't meet purri before final and his only opponents was inactive players
let me do math: if david played in group 8 he would meet purri in early stage of EDL playoff and already everybody would forget about him

David can easily be one of the almighty quake 2 duelers of all time. Almost taking down Purri, purri with tons of experience and skill, in the very prestigious EDL Grand Final is smth u can only do if you are absolutely top notch player. Keep in mind that in old days we had lousier mouses to play with, not as exotic mouse pads as today, crappier paks, 3.20 / Nocheat, in other words.....it's hell lot of easier to become pro faster these days with such computer / in-game developments. Also, when david started he can already from start train with a lot of good players, whilst Purri started in quake bronze age (shub/blue/makaveli/zack etc. should represent "stone age" and had to fight up his skills with competitors alike like damiah and provi, and that is entirely different and thus harder; u are going into the unknown where u don't know how far you can take quake2 as far as possible with skillz and tactics. Along this road new exotic mouses and pads came and shaped the destiny yet sharper than the times before.
Stop insulting David and let him know he did a good job instead. He should be very proud coming this far, ofc a bit expected, but against purri (like *rl* puts it so wonderfully on the news site: PURRI is PURRI) this Silver he earned he truly deserved it.

Purri now managed to break Damiahs record - three consecutive EDL wins. If Damiah, Syanid, Provi and Purri retired now, we would have a very interesting EDL next season.

I wonder if there's a demo of Damiah vs david @ rdm2 available (this game http://q2scene.net/edl/index.php?op=descr&id=66896 ) congratz purri EDL #4 and #6 we're actually best. damiah, provi, purri, syanid, zorre, aone, assassin all taking part in their good times. @ newash: rdm2 wasn't special at all, David had 1st rail-spawn and was running away all game, purri never really came close enough, but nothing special.
Great Game! It was all in maps. Dm3 was like a brainwash for David. Supersilent dm5 by PURRI, David didnt know a thing. Ptrip - explode of Davids power. Rdm2 - David believed in his fate. And mapkicking - dm1 by Dav - trully, PURRIs dozen of light years on dm1 should be send in out of space. ztn2dm3 by PURRI - kicked with accured anxiety. Ztn2dm2 - compromised side variation - ancient 'russian' gloomy map - perfect finish of another great European Duel Final.
