The rule sheet that we are meaning to issue for EDL #11 has now been published here: http://q2scene.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=123536

We are open for suggestions, opinions and feedback until September 22nd, 24.00 CET.

Let's do tl 10 for all games (mb except ro4 and higher).

Timers should be possible - this is the major feature for q2.

Let's replace double eliminations system to each to each system (like it's done in group stage), this is the most fair rating system IMHO.

Besides quads and ivuls, timing is pretty useless anyway. It's more important in Team dm than duel as well. Anyone in a duel who is going out of their way to time all kinds of items is just adding more work than needed.

Also, in this day and age you would think most people can natural time items through instinct. I do everything by instinct, I use pretty much vanilla everything besides bright skins and a slightly different chain gun sound.. and that's how it should be.

A fair duel tournament should really have set gaming environments that everyone has to abide by.

"I still dont see why it shouldn't be allowed or why they should be banned."

Because to me, timers are just a crutch so you can learn to time things easier when you go to actually not using them. Timing in Quake II is so simple it's unbelievable. 20 for armor, 30 for a weapon, 20 after mega... etc.

In 4v4, it's a bit different since it's hard to concentrate and remember about when a specific item is going to come up, so you use a timer. But in 1v1? Timing in duel is a skill, and there's nothing skilled about pushing a button telling you when a weapon will pop up. There's nothing stopping you from banning them, and generally discouraging their use so people will slowly stop using them.

"Yes, disabling "play" in servers would cause problems for users."

???????????????????????????????????????

Most TS tourney servers in the USA have the play command disabled and there's nothing wrong with them.............

"There is no way to stop it. "

I remember in NADL, they had a rule that all demos were to be looked over to see if people were using a timer or not. Perhaps something similar to this can be implemented?

As for "it can't be stopped", one could say the EXACT same thing about cheating and wallhacking. Like I said, their use should be discouraged, and after 10 EDL seasons, banning timers so people will actually LEARN to time items can't hurt in the slightest.

Most gaming keyboards have customizable buttons.
On my keyboard I have 30 buttons that I can assign timers to, I can record macros (jumps for example) etc. There is no way to stop it.
If you have just a simple keyboard you can find a script or a 3rd party program that will assign to keys specific commands.
Yes, disabling "play" in servers would cause problems for users. But there is no cure. :p
I rarely use timers, just for rl in dm1 emo cause I always go there emo
So I couldn't care less if timers would be banned, it would just help me. But after years and years of using them do we believe everyone will stop looking for ways round this ban.
I have discussed about timers so many times and I have loads of arguments vs all the claims how timers are bad. I still dont see why it shouldn't be allowed or why they should be banned.
Peace

I wonder who it was that started the whole 'Timers are wrong and should be banned' argument back in 2005....?

Oh yeah, now I remember...

It is VERY possible to disable timers via the use of disabling the play command, but I don't know about third-party applications like Winamp. Or maybe kitchen timers on your desk. New rule: take a picture of your computer desk before every match. emo

Anyway, it seems far we already have a public opinion on timers. emo

Ceba: yes, it's called timing items in your head. emo emo emo

I also dislike that we use timers in Q2. If it is possible to disable timers? Then I also would vote yes to this suggestion.

Not sure if this is possible thought? I mean you can always use third party timers, but I'm willing to take that leap of faith if this would be possible:

1. Disable the trigger/bind to play .wav files.
2. Disable any other if existing way to playback audio files through console/in-game.
3. Maybe use anticheat to check for some possible (known?) third party audio programs that would allow triggering playback of audio or something similar? To prevent these programs to be run at the same time as Q2. This is most likely not possible to prevent, but perhaps give information? Not sure about this though emo

Fader, we can join a server with timers disabled (sv_anticheat_disable_play) and i will tell you every time when weapon or armor, quad, 666 re spawns.

Timers where never really a cheat... they just reflect stupidity of players using them.

So the only reason timers are enabled is because you think they can't be banned?

I already said how sv_anticheat_disable_play can get rid of the play command. emo

With sv_anticheat_disable_play set to 1, it'll completely disable the play command if the person is using anticheat, and since players are required to use anticheat in the first place, I'm pretty sure that would do the job quite nicely.

I'm going to be honest; the only reason I used timers in the last EDL season is because everybody else was using them, and I felt I would have been at a disadvantage had I not used them. With everybody on the same playing field and having to time items themselves, I think it'd be a good experiment.

No timers would be an interesting development.

Another rule to add: no accepting people who have a history of inactivity/ quitting.
