i thought of this thread when u said nocheat and testing pogos settings as he uses normal async and maxfps and quadz says to this guy who had a similar problem as u to set back cl_async and then use cl_maxfps as normal hehe: http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php?topic=6492.msg69103#msg69103 and if someone is interested in a vanilla style quake2 or nocheat like client then check out this update which also got the mouse accel fixed and even got a writeconfig command and this client has tons of bugs and buffer overflows fixed so its very stable. more info in this link here and downloads and its updated this year: http://leray.proboards.com/thread/3258/

I just tried Pogo's settings and though they feel weird, it feels a lot better than I remember. Response times are really nice. Reminds me of the good old nocheat client days.

i use an old pc with p2 400mhz, 256mb ram, riva tnt 16mb, windows 2000 pro sp4, with a crt monitor, using quake2.exe with cl_maxfps 120 and gl_swapinterval 1 (no cl_async or r_maxfps cvars for this client) and dont notice any problems with movement or jumping or getting stuck in the stairs except sometimes but this is part of the protocol 34 sticky bug. also make sure that ur client has the cl_protocol cvar set right. for aprq2 and r1q2 it should be 35 and for q2pro it should be 36 or 0 (automatic) to take advantage of the protocol fixes the servers offers. else u will notice problems with ur client such as sticking to the floor

swapinterval 1 is having vsync turned on. Makes your Quake 2 feel slow and floaty, which I hate. Much prefer cl_async 1 with r_maxfps 360 and cl_maxfps 100

Rich manual for r1q2 client

cl_async (fps / physics / jumping / packet rate / etc)

One of the largest changes in the client is the separation of the network and rendering rate. Unlike other clients, R1Q2 accomplishes this by sampling input for several frames and generating one network packet. This avoids the hackyness exhibited in other clients that rely on Q2's packet loss recovery features to lower the network rate, however it also creates some more. The cvar cl_async controls this new asynchronous FPS behaviour, set cl_async 0 will use standard FPS identical to how Quake II 3.20 works.

With cl_async 1, cl_maxfps will control the NETWORK packet rate - ie how many packets/sec you send to the server. r_maxfps controls how many FRAMES are rendered per second at a maximum. You should never need to adjust r_maxfps, but try cl_maxfps 30 or other similar values in order to save bandwidth and server CPU time if possible.

Using a lower cl_maxfps will cause a few issues, notably: physics exploits such as crate jumping will not work, jump height when launching off ramps will be lower and prediction misses when climbing stairs can occur. For the vast majority of mods you shouldn't really experience a problem unless you're one of these people who run cl_maxfps 200 or something silly. For mods where jumping is crucial, eg the Q2 Jump mod, the cl_async cvar can be set to 0 to restore original Q2 "one packet per frame" behaviour.

Even when running a lower cl_maxfps, important events such as weapon firing or sending a command will still cause a packet to be sent immediately if cl_instantpacket 1 is set (default). This will cause you to go slightly above the cl_maxfps packet rate at times but gives you the latency benefit as if you were running cl_async 0.

If you use a joystick or keyboard to control the view, you will want to use cl_async 0 and cl_maxfps 90 or so as the cl_async 1 code currently does not work very well with anything other than mouse input for controlling the view.

Note that if you use R1GL with R1Q2, you may find your frame rate is capped at 60 (vsync). This is because R1GL correctly applies the default "gl_swapinterval 1" cvar which controls this behavior, whereas 3.20 ref_gl did not. Use gl_swapinterval 0 to allow for rendering with no waiting for buffer swaps.
-----------------------------------------
play>pogo played with
cl_async 0
cl_maxfps 120 (then r_maxfps 120)
gl_swapinterval 1

on CRT 120hz refresh rate

cl_async 0 is basically unplayable on r1q2. Actually, I think the problem might be that I had cl_smoothsteps set to 3 and it was just glitching on everything from stairs to boxes. It seems better now anyway.

i highly doubt it has anything to do with the mod at all since this is actually a communication between the client and the server. sv_strafejump_hack should be set on the server to a higher value than 0 (perhaps 1 or 2) to fix the sticky bug and for clients perhaps u should set cl_async to 0 if u experience problems with it set to 1. so before u cry on the server make sure the problem are not on ur side

Delita, its the "stair-fucker" emo ive been monitoring it for a while and it seems to be pretty bad both pingwise and playwise so i decided to put it down, will look for an alternative in the east of NL. If you find out that the other servers got the same problem with the stairs it might be something with the source i compiled (x64), so please jump around and see how it feels on the other ones.

Cheers

Not sure if that server below is what I'm about to talk about, but I tried your servers Revo and they are nice in terms of connection speed and smoothness, but I kept getting stuck in stairs over and over, and I found it hard to double jump.

Not sure if it's a frame cap setting or something, but other than that the servers are nice! Thanks. emo

Why dont you guys go talk in some forum-thread instead of posting comments in a topic that has nothing to do with Delita and earlier news whatsoever? And i can understand why the admins removed that newspost in the first place. I think its great that he actually wanted to teach new/old players how to play duel so the duel scene can become more active, but you people just blame him for shitty things and write comments that makes him completely lose motivation for it, and i cant blame him.

I want to read how the servers actually work for the players in this newspost, so i know which ones are good/bad. If you dont want to write about the servers in this newspost, please just dont write at all, or start some troll-thread in the forum.

There are some routing problems with the DE server atm so i decided to put another one up thats better (the old one will still be up as well).

New one can be found at 91.108.81.203:27910, better routing and probably better ping for most of you.
