Introduction: Ragnarok

Nouby was running across the wide fields of shards, he seemed very excited this morning. As if he had something important to say to his fellow Quake2 inhabitants.

Quake2 was a small planet located in the ID solar system; it was crowded with many small persons like Nouby, a sort of short sized men with big muscles and members. They could run very fast and jump high and far.
This little world was governed by 10 supernatural deities who were praised and respected by all the people living on Quake2.

Nouby arrived at the Basement which is his favourite place to hang around with his friends. He was exhausted and could hardly speak…
Nouby: “It’s… gonna… happen… TODAY!”
Friend of Nouby Nr. 1: “What the f*ck are you talking about Nouby?
Friend of Nouby Nr. 2: “Calm down and take a big breath ‘cause we can’t understand you man”

*Nouby kneels down and take a big breath*

Nouby: “The Ragnarok is today!”

[Ragnarok: This word which is inherited from the Scandinavian mythology roughly means that the Gods are about to fight.]

Nouby was like many other people from the same age, he wanted to become a warrior. His examples were none the less than the Gods who were reigning over the world of Quake2.
Although he knew that a Ragnarok could cause natural catastrophes (earthquake, dark sky with thunder and lightings, twisters!), he was excited to see his role models battling to determine which side was the best.

The entire population of the planet were staring at the sky, waiting for the battle of the titans, all the places were overcrowded but Nouby found a good place to sit and watch…
Nouby: “Room is OK, Room is OK… COME COME!”

From there, they could see a small man dressed with a cape and holding a sceptre in the hand. It was Lord Gravgon, the highest ranked clerk in the Quake2 religion (kind of a pope for the believers).
Lord Gravgon started to concentre his psychic force into the magical sceptre; we could hear the ground trembling. Nouby and all the other citizens of the Quake2 Planet were running everywhere wondering what was happening, they were excited and anxious.

Suddenly, the clerk smacked his sceptre onto the ground and a huge lightning spouted out of it to reach the sky.
The cloud got torn apart and a big hole appeared in the sky.
Now we could see 10 sparkling lights going down… the Gods had just materialised into concrete bodies made of flesh and bones.
Once they landed into the arena, two teams were formed and they started to introduce themselves by shouting their name with a loud echoed and pompous voice:

Deity Purri: “PUUUUUUUURRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII”
Deity Scooby: “SCOOOOOOOBYYYYYYYYY”
Deity Assasin: “ASSAAAASIIIIIIIIIIIIN”
Deity Thaigo: “THAIGOOOOOOOOOOOO”
Deity Gerdt: “GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERDT”
The 5 together: “HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA WE ARE THE STRONGEST”

Deity Damiah: “DAMIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH”
Deity Provi: “PROOOOOOOVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII”
Deity Odium: “OOOOOODIUUUUUUUUUM”
Deity Optimizer: “PeeeeeeeeeCeeeeeeeeWeeeeeee?????????????” erm… OOOOOPTIIIIIMIIIIIZEEEEEER”
Deity Bubkez: “[hIsseN rAensaD]”
The 5 together: “NO WE ARE THE STRONGEST IN FACT! HAHAHAHAHAHA”

After this ceremony, they were ready for the final showdown!

Okay after this esoteric introduction (damn I watch too many movies really :p), back to the reality. I’m gonna describe what happened during this historical afternoon step by step.

At 16:00 CET, I was very surprised to see that both teams looked very motivated, I thought I’d have to take them by the hands and create their team channel, their tags, etc. myself but no! They had already sorted everything by themselves.

I could even join the ventrilo channel of Team-1. First impressions: Assasin is less serious than what I thought (I always see him as the sword fighter you know), Scooby has the same voice as the godfather, both of them speak a better English than what they write on IRC, I knew how Gerdt sounded already (like “Hi kids, I’m the man here” if you want to know :)), Purri sounded like a cheerful little man and when Thaigo arrived I could swear it was Steve Urkle speaking :D

Unfortunately I couldn’t hear the other team but from what I’ve heard, the three Swedes were talking together and provi and damiah were focused on fragging.

Other big surprises for me: we could find a server very quickly, the q2tv’s were up and running kinda smoothly, one thing could ruin everything though provi wasn’t there yet at 16:00 and I almost called the Finnish police and asked them to go look after him in all the pubs of Finland. Somehow, I knew this game could finally happen today. And it did happened…

Q2DM2 – Tokay’s Tower



We started on dm2 because Provi was a bit late and I guess he had to clear his mind a bit.
The game started with Team-1 having the advantage thanks to confident and Belgian-approved Lift control by Gerdt. The three other men of his team were visiting him regularly to tool up with armor and rails or bfg to get ready and attack the Quad.
Nevertheless, they couldn’t really grab quads mainly because Odium had already started his RL-Lift ownage.
So we had Team-2 getting more quads but getting killed quickly and Team-1 fragging more thanks to the RA control… With such dm2 masters like Team-1 had, we could have thought they had it in the pocket after ~10 minutes.
But it wasn’t, I can’t remember how and by who exactly the Lift got taken over by Team-2, but for sure it was the turning point of this game. Bubkez started to camp the lift, Damiah could take armors and powerful weapons to add some more pressure on the Quad which was completely denied to Team-1. During those last 10 minutes, Team-1 seemed completely frozen and Team-2 score never ceased to increase. Team-2 won an very weird game.

Q2DM1 – The Edge



One of the nicest maps to spectate, although purri wasn’t in its best shape that day, he still managed to pull out a regular rail ownage there helped by Assasin (I think). The game was decided at Room, Team-1 had 2 people at Rail and 2 people at Mega (Scooby and Thaigo) while Team-2 had the regular 4 positions tactic, but Optimizer cleverly gave up the rail pos. to help Damiah and Provi at MH, which gave Scooby and Thaigo a very hard time. Those were often tooled up with railguns provided by purri or Assasin but they were getting butchered by Team-2 chainguns in Mega, free rails for Damiah Provi and Opti lead to a final lock down of the map and the victory.

Q2DM3 – The Frag Pipe



The rail made the difference on this map. At quad the game was very close; the quads were shared mainly by Damiah and Scooby. But at Rail, Purri got beaten by Provi and I think that’s what allowed Team-2 to overall get more quads and especially more respawn frags.

Q2DM5 – The Pits



After these disappointing games, Team-1 had to wake up… And they did it. Finally they had their teamplay working properly. Scooby quadrunning, Purri and Assasin railguarding the quad zone, Thaigo chainmagneting at RA-Room.
Team-2 focused on RA-Room and could often come with 200 Armor and chainguns at quad to face Team-1 railers, but Team-1 coordination was better and Team-2 was often outnumbered.
The same for the quadruns, Team-1 quadrunners were often escorted to the RA-room to take it over.
Nice dm5 teamplay show won by Team-1.

Conclusion:

This game was one of the smoothest one I’ve ever admined, I’d like to thanks all the players for making it possible, it was nice to see such a good atmosphere. Also many thanks go to JOWA and Pogo who hosted the Q2TV’s. I hope you enjoyed this match!
