Introduction
In 2001, the whole Quake2 community had the chance to spectate an historical match which was also the firestarter for the very first NDML.
The best Q2 players of their time meeting each other on all the maps to determine who was the best: Scandinavia or Europe.
After this remembered combat of the titans was played, time has past and the idea of doing it again have been tickling many q2ers minds during those 4 years.
Thats why Im proud to announce the second edition of the Allstar game aka NDML*5 Allstars.
To start off this big Q2 show, I will try my best to write a preview which will, hopefully, make you more familiar with the players who are going to take part.
As you know, this time the Allstar game wont be a battle between Scandinavia and Europe but an exhibition match featuring two balanced teams.
Lets first have a look at those teams and their characteristics
Team 1:
Lineup: Purri, Scooby, Assasin, Thaigo, Gerdt
First we have Purri, no introduction is needed for him; hes been considered by many as the best q2 player for years (actually the first NDML revealed him). Although he can be considered as an oldschool player, he also is the one who has spread the newschool type of playing q2 which can be characterised as aggressive and fast paced. Purris style is a perfect combination of smooth movements and unmatched skills with all weapons, hes known for being THE rail freak but what makes him better than any other Swedish railers is the fact that hes simply flawless with all the other weapons (even blaster!).
Next is Scooby. Despite his controversial personality, nobody will deny that hes the best Polish player. Although he is of course very skilled, his most lethal weapon is his brain. When you watch Scoobys demo, the phrase One Man Army naturally comes to your mind. His playing style is the exact contrary to his attitude on IRC: nervous and clever (as opposed to chilled out and stupid ;)). In game he looks like a spastic children (like someone said once), always running everywhere to make sure everything is done correctly. His excellent reading of the game is what makes him an extraordinary leader in a team.
Assasin can be assimilated as Scoobys right arm in a game. On most maps there is a Rail position, Assasin is the man you need to keep it while the others are worried about the Quad (for instance). A great thing with this player is that he doesnt seem to rely on his teammates to perform well. I see Assasin like a very useful teamplayer: You can place him at a position and then not worry about him for the whole game: you can be sure that position will never be a safe place for his opponents.
His playing style is also rail oriented, as Scooby would say, hes an intelligent railer, he might not have the most insane aim but he knows how to collect many frags with that weapon.
We have now arrived to Thaigo, the Finnish legend who had turned out as an old lost glory and who recently came back to the top again with his clan Wizards. Thaigo is famous for his extremely fast aim and his glued-to-target chaingun. But hes more than that; hes a very complete player who can take care of many different positions in a game. Sometimes used for the main positions (Quad or Mega Room for instance) or for the side-positions like BFG on dm6. His strength is the experience, you just cannot fool him and his enemies have to think twice before trying to kill him.
To complete this first Allstar team: we have Gerdt. Probably the newest player among the allstars, Gerdt managed to reach a top level in a very short period of time. Hes been called by many as a Swede wannabe and now we can just stare at his impressive game style which is a combination of the typical Scandinavian-style (fast movements and crazy railing) with the inherited Central European (Belgian to be exact) teamplay discipline. Indeed, Gerdt is a clever player who especially shines when the map played is all about timing and team coordination.
Team B:
Line-up: Damiah, Provi, Odium, Bubkez, Optimizer
The captain of this team is Damiah, another old Finnish player who had always been handicapped by his connection. Since his ping has decreased, his ownages never ceased to increase. Damiah has an extra-terrestrial aim, he can hit when nobody would hit and he really has a singular playing style. Besides his insane aim, Damiah is also kind of a brain in a team. Hes always well aware of what is going on and he plays his game, everything always seems well settled in his mind before he does a move. Damiah follows a master plan and if this plan works, he can be unstoppable. Overall he is an excellent player at the key positions.
Another Finnish powerhouse is added to this team with Provi. When that man has a railgun in the hand, hes like a wall: nobody can approach the zone hes guarding. This player has an amazing steady aim combined with a lot of experience.
I think you got it: Provi is the rail man; hes like a sentinel that you can place at the Rail position of a map to keep the enemy away from it.
When he manages to setup a routine at the position he is, he can become a true frag machine and give his team the opportunity to lock down and rape.
The third is Odium, who I will call Mr. All-round. This player is good overall-, which means for example that hes probably not the best railer, yet he has a very good rail aim. Same goes for everything, he doesnt have his own particularity, or if he has one it is to be good at everything and to be able to hold any position thanks to his old school experience.
Hes the kind of player that is very useful to make the bridge between the two main positions in a team (i.e. Quad and Rail).
M0RPH-X was the Polish element of this team, hes a very useful player who can play at many campy positions. Unfortunately he wont be able to play so hes being replaced by Bubkez which is a good thing because both players are usually holding the same kind of positions in a game.
Bubkez is known for his unbreakable lifts defence.
The last is Optimizer, aka the Rape Machine
Hes the typical Swedish rail hoe, the one who can change a normal map domination into a complete lock down and a rail frag fest.
Thanks to his long time HPW experience, Optimizer knows how to cope with the most difficult situations.
My predictions:
All in all, I expect the team 2 to win dm1 unless purri is in a very very good shape. As for dm2, Team 1 is more likely to win it especially because they have two dm2 gods: Scooby and Gerdt.
Dm3 is a hard guess, well get to see outstanding duels there with (probably) Scooby against Damiah at quad and purri vs. provi at rail, luck might be the deciding factor here.
Q2dm5 is hard to predict too but Id go for team 1 since this map is a lot teamplay coordination oriented and this team have good team leaders.
Dm7 will be a real frag fest and it can be like dm3, luck will decide, I can see it as an extremely close game.
On dm8, I think team 1 has an advantage for the PU running but team 2 have crazy railers who could destroy some Powershields very quickly.
Quick Interviews:
Damiah:
<Gravgon> Hello, you are the captain of the Allstar team 2, how does it feel for you?
<Damiah> Hi. Well I was kind of surprised that I got so many votes. But ye, its nice to be the captain of the team 2.
<Gravgon> Could you give your impressions about the players in your team?
<Damiah> We have a good team, like it should be in a Allstar game. A lot of railhoes :>
<Gravgon> What do you think are your strength and weakness compared to the other team ?
<Damiah> I guess everyone are pretty active at the moment, so im expecting a nice and tight game.
The other team is really strong, Purri, Scooby etc. but we have a nice team also.
Everyone says that team1 will win easily, but im sure we will do our best from letting that happen :>
<Gravgon> What are your predictions for each map?
<Damiah> huh. hmm, hard to say..dm1 for team2 and dm3 for team 1 :)
<Gravgon> Do you already have an idea of the line-ups you'll sort for each maps ?
<Damiah> Well, I havent thought that so much yet, but We will see it on sunday when we know who are able to play then.
Purri:
<Gravgon> Hello, you are the captain of the Allstar team 1, how does it feel for you?
<PURRI> Its always a honour to be a captain. Espesially for a great team like the allstars.
<Gravgon> Could you give your impressions about the players in your team?
<PURRI> Never played with anyone exept Thaigo when I played for wizards. So I dont know for 100% how they play on all maps and stuff. But sure is a good list of names.
<Gravgon> What do you think are your strength and weakness compared to the other team ?
<PURRI> I think both teams are quite equal. Dayform will deside quite alot how the maps go.
<Gravgon> What are your predictions for each map?
<PURRI> 8 maps ... 5-3 for the other team. Hard to say wich maps go where =)
<Gravgon> Do you already have an idea of the line-ups you'll sort for each maps ?
<PURRI> I dont have a idea yet. But I think it will be kind of a democratic desision. People should know what maps they are good on etc.. If they dont, I simply have to bench them anyway =)
<Gravgon> Any other comment to add ?
<PURRI> I just hope everyone shows up and that we can provide a nice exibition match for the Q2 lovers out there, and to remind most of us that this is a game of love, not war! | |
