Firstly: BIG thx to Daelmun for translation from russian "english" to good english! :)
I have asked several people known in the world of Quake2 to write a small feedback on RDL-2.
.
[MiR]-RPG (RDL-1 champion, one of the best Russian Q2-duellers)
In comparison with the first RDL, I think the second is a small step forward when it comes to organization. Though it's difficult to judge a league when you're not participating, it's not hard to see that uploading demos was a good thing, and that everyone remembered the rules, even the admins :) The news were constantly being updated by paradox (AlexyeNov), while fpS and atu were doing their share too. It caused a revival of the intrest for competitive q2-playing, which means a whole lot. Afer 9 years of playing q2, most people playing it are adults with less time available due work/partying :) It's a pity that q2pro-GTV that allow a bigger amount of spectators only were available in the last rounds. Hopefully the GTV will be ready for RDL3 :) Poor fpS, it's the third time he has been denied the first place :) If there will be a 3rd RDL, I'll play if I got the connection, and of course if I'm motivated enough and got the time :)) GL to all.
blaiz (UDL-2 and RDL-2 Champion)
In general, my impressions of the league are mostly good: excellent organization, skilled players, fairplay. Personally I was convinced that the level of duelling was higher in Russia than in Ukraine, especially on certain maps... Some strong players didn't sign up though (RPG, Wicked) and many turned inactive, allthough not many among the less skilled players. Judging by the signups, the strongest players were Nol1ght, PnP, AlexyeNov and certainly fpS - but it requires quite the force to overcome master Damiah :) Once again thanks to admins and organizers!
SkulleR (the author and developer of q2pro, GTV q2pro)
I'm sincerely happy that my time working on GTV for q2 has been valued and that my application has been used with success, all the positive response on the project will undoubtedly motivate me to further develop the q2pro in general and GTV specificly.
Shai (RDL-2 participant)
Exclusive positive. About the games - I have already explained a specific negitive experience; my games with Nol1ght.
Alexander_The_Uzver (RDL-2 participant, game admin and admin of RDL + GTV servers)
To begin with I'd like to note that with the arrival of new top players, everyone starts to train more and communicate with eachother a lot more than beforre. Players start to get to know eachothers, and they share their experience and impressions of matches. And the Russian Duel League was not only equal compared to previous tourneys, it surpassed all tournaments in the last years in scale. And it should keep on doing so. During the last years, respect the players inbetween was a rarity and considered a sign of weakness or subservience. Now it's another situation - the general skillevel of players is higher, less stupid discussions and there are more active players around. And it is not necessary to stop now. The community wishes to compete? We should put as much effort as possible into making sure that the next tournament is even better and more interesting.
KPAH (RDL-2 participant)
My impressions are mostly positive. Thanks to all who played me on equal pings. And a special wish - in the groupstages the games should be played best out of 3 maps.
AiD (RDL-2 participant)
Nyyy.... It's a bad thing that I came in last place in my group. On the good side, contrary to what the naysayers playing CS/Q3/etc say, Q2 continues TO LIVE, due to the organizers and you in particular :) I can add that the tournament was run effeciently, games were played quickly, but it was still possible to schedule games for each round even though being busy with work. The maplist is good as well.
Kabysdoh (RDL-2 participant)
My impressions of the second Russian Duel League is that it's a good thing the maplist was different in each round (adding new maps in each round) , so that the players were forced to play new maps (forced by rules, not by the mappick of other players). In my opinion, this is 100% justified. Actually, the maplist is practically identical to the maplist of EDL-4, with the exception that the Europeans decided to play q2dm2 in instead of q2duel1 (aerowalk). By the way, the map q2duel is in the center of a fierce debate - and there are a lot of unjustified and unreasonable attacks on the map. In my opinion: an excellent duel map. By the way. the number of games played on the map (due to the maplist being narrowed down in the early rounds) is making the map-statistics misleading for those who are not familiar with the way the RDL-2 maplist worked, they just see plain numbers and conclude that all players had q2duel1 as the homemap :) And many of us prepared for RDL-2 by playing several duels on q2rdm7, a map they play in EDL on a regular basis. Many also practiced ptrip which isn't a new map by any means, but I personally heard other players say they had never even heard of the map during the map-voting before the league started. So 5 points for the decision.
Some bewilderment was caused in my group by the decision of the admins when it came to awarding points in the end of the qualifying round. The rules clearly states that the results of games with players who has left the league are cancelled, but still some of the players who were competing about being "the best of the fourth" in order to qualify for the groupstage had received points for games not taking place. It clearly needs to be corrected to make it more fair. As critizism without a constructive element is senseless, here is my constructive offer: I would like to try to fix the layout for RDL-3. Another specific unpleasant moment was the discussion around the games of nol1ght on Russian servers. They were all 100% according to the rules, but personally I saw it coming before the league started: it is necessary to provide a neutral server immediately, now that we've allowed Ukrainian players to join the league. But this problem will be solved by the start of the next league, so the case is closed.
As a whole the league has left me with a very good impression. Personally I think that I've learned very much from this league. Not everything can be learned in friendly games. At present on đó servers new maps are being played more often, not only q2dm1->q2dm3->ztn2dm3. It's a pity though, that in the end Mishko could not pull it through, but nothing can change the past. He is the champion of Russia at least :) By the way, it is interesting that the two best players of Russia based on the final standings, play on mice worth up to 1000 rub :D And still it would be desirable that the admins read the rules even closer, so nothing will happen outside the control of Paradox. In the end: to me, playing games without a competitive element is pointless, therefore many thanks to the organizers for the time spent to preserve the fun for all of us.
nol1ght (RDL-3 3rd place holder)
To begin with the bad:
Firstly - it wasn't very pleasant for me untill the playoffs, in the groupstages the rounds were stretched out, I understand that players are busy with work etc, but just 2 duels in a week should be possible to be played without too much hassle. Secondly - i was a bit concerned with the skill of the average player, I know that the good players were spread around evenly between the groups, but still Thirdly - the whine of some people on the RDL-site after the game with Notorious Fourthly - was not pleasant to play on bad pings Fifthly - fpS did not get first place and didn't get to beat Damiah Sixthly - I have absolutely forgotten about Umustdie absence from the league, he is an asshole (??) but plays adequately...
Now the good: Firstly - the organization was very good - the admins haven't just organized the players and ran RDL-2, but also had to control the mad crowd :) When it's necessary they will correct you, and other times they will agree with you, to summarize: top-notch people. Thanks to all of them! Secondly - I liked the medal, a bit darkish, but still mine :) Thridly - that the league did finish! :) Just to make it clear, I do not think that there are more bad parts about this league than good, I just simply remember the bad parts better than ther good :) RDL-2 as a whole - it was a success!
PnP (placed 5-6th in RDL-2)
To me it was a pleasant experience. I have had tons of fun, I felt the adrenaline pump in my weins and other emotions as well. I've gotten to know different players. it's a good thing that players actually played their matches and didn't give too many walkovers. Though I got to admit near the end I started to grow a bit tired. The fact that not only the distances but also the bad routing makes the pings bad, only makes me hope that our internet providers will find a better routing so connections will be better for us all. Refree and personal frend, Paradox, had a very nice attitude and showed all the way through the league great endurance, willpower and dedication to make this league end well. He had good help from his fellow admins like atu though. I wish all participants good luck in future games and with further increase of the players skill in the year to come, the Russian players should not play worse than the foreigners. Certainly, in the next RDL a fellow countryman should win :) GL HF
Rambutan (placed 7-8th in RDL-2)
My impressions on the league are too subjective. It is the first time I've participated in an online tournament, and first time I've played in a Q2 tournament. Unfortunately in the beginning of RDL my group suffered from players not showing up, so I moved through to the groupstage. Then I managed to steal some points from the favorites in my group, making my way to the playoffs. Actually, the way the groups were put together was favoring me, so I was sort of lucky. Well, then I was psychologically prepared for not progressing any further - I did not prepare, and couldn't figure out the necessary strategy. So I lost. I was upset. It was very frustrating.
Therefore, after many months, I have once again gone to war on Q2 duels. Unless it would be added to the rules that players are forced to find a neutral server with equal pings, if such a server exists.
As a whole, I look at the tournament as a good experience for me. And from playing TeamFortress my rocketlauncher aim is quite good with ping 120 :)
Voron (RDL-2 participant)
I'll give you some of my impressions. The league was well ran! Big thanks to all you organizers and refs. It's a pity that an Ukrainian player, Blaizz, won the RUSSIAN duel league, but to lose to him is not a shame. fpS didn't have the margins on his side :) It's just a game, and you don't get killed. We enjoy life! :)
Werwolf (RDL-2 participant)
For me the tournament began in the qualifying rounds, and it also ended there :) In the qualifying stage there was a sensible maplist, with new maps that freshened up the game and forced players to study these maps, which is useful since international-level q2 duelling isn't all about q2dm1. There were some problems when it came to scheduling, but all these were solved objectively by the admins. The groupstage, in which I didn't participate in, was a tense affair, with everyone doing their best in order to reach the playoffs. Those who did pass through the groupstage really deserved their spots in the playoffs. In the playoffs the favorites all moved along. The final was a bit hurt by the fact it was played on very high pings, but all in all Blaizz deserved his win. To me it looked like fpS wasn't prepared for the close and tense strategic game Blaizz put up. The game turned into the highlight of the tournament, really close games and both players had to struggle the entire match through. Damiah and Blaizz played a awesome game! In general the tournament turned out really well, with great games and good organization. Only disappointment was the absence of many strong players, but noone can force them to play. I hope that we will see all the stars in the next tournament :)
Umustdie (one of the TOP-players in Russia)
I did not participate. I did not watch the games. Only i can say - i like small ping!
iosys (main spectator in Russia)
RDL-2 was a success, undoubtedly. The mistakes from previous season has been taken into consideration, and rules have been corrected adequately. The admins have done a great job, and showed themselves worthy the responsibility of running such a league. Of course there were minor nuances, but in the bigger picture they're ignsignificant compared to the workload put into the league by the admins and players. Everyone helped this league, players, admins and spectators alike, with great enthusiasm. We should be happy we got a site where news and results were kept up to date. Personally I spectated a few games, but I didn't have enough time available to watch as many as I wanted. But I really enjoyed watching good friends and other players. Already in the groupstage did we see new players perform well, there are always someone new coming up, either from those who have played this game for years, or from the new generation of players. Even with all these new games around to play, there are players who still wish to play quake2. Q2 community grows, and everyone playing grows. And those who plays will never allow q2 to die. Quake2 4ever.
fpS (RDL-1 + RDL-2 runner up, RDL-2organizer)
Has refused to give a comment.

Damiah (the best duel player in Europe, EDL-2 + EDL-2 champion, placed 3rd in EDL-1, winner of EDL3 vs RDL2 showgame)
I think the league went really well and smooth (at least I got that impression :) The winnerbracket final and the grand final were nice games and it was nice that Blaizz came from the loserbracket and won the whole league.
Syanid (EDL-2 + EDL-3 organizer, placed 3rd in EDL-3)
Well, I haven't been following RDL so intensively to form a good opinion about it. Ive Been too busy with my real life things ; But from what I have seen your league went pretty fine, don't know if you had many walkovers there, I haven't seen any. You posted news on the site regularily, which gives me the impression that the organization was working, but as I said I didn't follow the league closely enough to know much about it :
The showgame with Damiah was good, though you should've announced it better, I didn't even know that they were playing before I accidentally saw that you posted a GTV ip in the EDL channel :)
|D|daelmun (admin and correspondent www.q2scene.net/scene, also translates russian-english into norwegian-english given enough time)
hehe, not much to say, thought it was ran really well :) Just something I wish in general is to get some new maps in duel leagues like q2next in TDM, and get someone to shoutcast the final, like DaHanG did for EDL-3. Would be awesome together with GTV ;)
wision (winner of EDC#1, one of the TOP players in Europe)
Hmm, didn't follow RDL much... only watched some matches... But it looked nice and well organized
arch (one of the top-players in Europe)
Nice league it seems, all I can say.
Thaigo (one of the TOP tdm-players in Europe)
I haven't followed it enough to form a good opinion about it. Yeah, of course it is more fun to watch games between good players, but in my humble opinion those showgames don't have much value when it comes to show who is best, it's the actual league that counts. | |
