EuroQ2L: favorites going down2007-01-08 15:29 | daelmun
Yesterday we were witnesses to not only one, but three games in the EuroQ2L playoffs where a 5th and deciding map was needed. After a few disappointing walkover wins, these games were a reminder how great TDM can be when it just "clicks". And being a favorite coming into the game doesn't mean the outcome is given in advance.

Read more for a closer look at the playoff games just being finished in Div II and III.

Div II

[CD] has been cruising through the groupstage (group A) with only one loss, and 0 maplosses in the remaining games, convincingly winning the group with a margin of 5 points. So needless to say there were pretty much a favorite coming into the game with the Polish clan mdt. mdt hasn't showed the kind of dominance [CD] has, but still managed to finish 2nd in group B (7 points behind groupwinner TAK!). But they showed good form when they took down ttnm in the first round of the playoffs.

Anyway, to make a short story long, the game was an epic!

Div III

In Div III we saw both the groupwinners taking a beating in their games, and the games were extremely close and a 5th map was needed.

The sole United Kingdom clan left in EuroQL, [ecf], has fought their way to the top of group B, but it was no walk in the park. So the Polish clan [H], who finished 2nd in group A, did have a fair chance at defeating the experienced Brits. And so they did, after 5 maps of shifting mapcontrol. None of the games were as close as in the previous game, but that just shows that maps really makes a difference in this game.

In the other playoff game we saw NMT, who had played convincingly up to this point winning group A with quite a big margin, versus a familiar team to them, LmW. NMT and LmW had met eachother twice, and the games ended 2-0 and 2-1 for the Russians. So no need to say, the Russian side was favorite to win this time around as well. But, as usual for this quiet Sunday in January; expect something and the opposite will happen.
